A tithe literally means one tenth. Tithing is the act of giving to God the first tenth of our income. An offering is a gift to God over and above that first tenth. God provides all good things, and asks His people to give back to Him both tithe and offerings.
Why Give to God?
God does not need our money. Giving to God the first part of our income is an act of faith and obedience which demonstrates our trust in God above all else. When we trust that God will provide for us and obey Him in giving of our income, He pours out blessings onto us.
"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." - Luke 6:38
"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this," says the LORD of hosts, "if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows. Then I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of the ground; nor will your vine in the field cast its grapes," says the LORD of hosts." - Malachi 3:10-11
"Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." - 2 Corinthians 9:6-7
